“Like this, mom?” I asked, awkwardly fluffing some flowers in a crystal vase.

“Oh, good Lord,” she muttered, coming up behind me. “Just place the flowers I’ve already separated out in the vases and I’ll arrange them myself. You’re terrible at this.”

Rolling my eyes, I took a step back to allow her to work her magic on the flowers. “You’re welcome, I’m happy to be helping you out today instead of enjoying my day off.”

She sighed and looked up at me. “I’m sorry, sweetie. I’m just a little touchy today. I can’t believe two of my people called in sick today. Today. When we have a wedding.”

“Really, it’s no worries. I was actually happy to have a reason to leave my apartment.”

“So, when will I be getting to do this for my son’s wedding?”

Groaning, I mock-glared at her. “Really?”

“Just kidding, just kidding.” She looked thoughtful as she continued to arrange the centerpiece. “Your father’s been asking about you. You haven’t come home for dinner for a while.”

“Sorry mom, I’ve just been working a lot lately.”

“I know you love that bar, but when are you going to start focusing on a career?”

“Mom, the bar is my career. I love this business and I’m happy.”

She shook her head, moving on to the next table. “You’re lonely, I can see it in your eyes. You need to find a good nine to five job and a nice girl to settle down with. Enough of this business of working until two in the morning. You need stability and a normal life.”

Swearing under my breath, I groaned and rolled my eyes again. “Mom, I’m not lonely.” Not really. Okay, maybe. “But I love my job and I’m not quitting. I want to move up the ladder and stay in the bar industry.”

“Whatever you say, dear,” she said with a smile. “So, how’s Taylor?”

I shrugged. “She’s good, same as always I guess.”

“Well, when you find time to come over for dinner, make sure you bring her along. I haven’t seen her in ages.”

Shaking my head, I continued the lame task of shoving the bundles of flowers in the vases and setting them on the table as my mother followed behind me to fix them all. I didn’t even really understand why she asked me to come help if she was just going to have to redo everything anyway. I guess it was good I was getting some time in with my mom but there was only one place my mind was; a certain blonde, green eyed girl that had me wrapped around her fucking finger.
